Why mozy why?

With Mozy hiking their prices earlier this month everyone is wondering where can I go now?  Basically I was looking at about $50 a month for my system.  This is just unacceptable.  After looking at a couple of companies like Carbonite and Backblaze I have settled with Backblaze.  I would have gone with Carbonite but they almost completely throttle your upload speed to nil after you upload over 200GB.  This is just totally unacceptable.  Backblaze seems to be a solid platform with an average client.  The continuous backup is a nice feature that others don’t offer.  Plus the commitment to $5 a month is the real winner option now.  If you are with Mozy and looking to move away I would go with Backblaze and use coupon code “byemozy” for an additional discount.  You can follow this link to start getting your new account set http://www.backblaze.com/partner/af1119

Hate screensavers? This one could actually save your system!

First I need to say that this is not my idea.  I am merely passing along some information that I know will help many of you out there.  When I am working on systems the number one issue I see is the spyware or malware infections causing 95% of the trouble.  I tell people that they need to either setup a schedule to scan or kick it off manually but really that never happens.  If you schedule it most of the time the system is powered off and thus no good.  With this new setup you can have your system scan while you are away but not having to leave your system on at night!  Read more »

Happy Thanksgiving… But Black Friday is tomorrow!

While today we are all going to be sitting around enjoying the great feasts and wonderful conversation with family tomorrow is going to be a wild day.  So taking a little time this morning I thought I would offer a bit of advice on a few of your technology purchases for tomorrow.

1.)  Unless the items is an old close out it will most likely work with all the major computer systems.  While XP is on the way out there is still a huge user base.  Most of your newer items are going to be Vista/Windows7 slanted.  This might be a good time to begin upgrading.  The big issue that people will wonder when they read a product box is, do they run 32bit or 64bit.  If you right click your “My Computer” (“computer” in Windows7) and select properties you will see what version you are running.

2.)  You will be asked at all the major retail outlets if you want a warranty.  I normally pass on the store warranties and purchase mine at http://squaretrade.com. They have the better prices and they will include accidental coverage in their warranty quotes.  I have purchased many warranties through them and have also made claims.  Both processes are easy and smooth.

3.)  If you are looking for a few idea’s then here are some of the neat items that I would recommend. Read more »
